Frequently Asked Questions

What is SVSHIP?

St Vincent’s Sydney Health Innovation Precinct (SVSHIP) is a collaborative partnership focusing on medical research and healthcare delivery. The SVSHIP cornerstone partners are co-located together in the heart of Sydney – on Gadigal land – and include St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney, and St Vincent’s Clinic. We also have a further group of collaborative partners who share our passion for health, research and education, including University of New South Wales, Kirby Institute, Nursing Research Institute, University of Notre Dame, Australian Catholic University, Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety & Depression, Cunningham Centre for Palliative Care, and National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs.

SVSHIP Research Week 2024 is a program of events running across the week 9-13th September. Held in various locations across our Darlinghurst campus, RW2024 will provide opportunities for researchers and healthcare providers from our Precinct partners, and beyond, to come together to present and discuss their research, learn more about the depth and breadth of research and development that is happening across our partners and collaborators, gain knowledge from external national and international experts, and to build connections and new collaborations.

Not only will participants be able to discuss the latest research with a much broader network of colleagues than in their usual day-to-day activities, they will also have opportunities to upskill in various areas, including AI in health and research, research ethics, science communication, and translation and industry engagement.

SVSHIP researchers in training (Masters and PhD candidates), early- to mid-career researchers, and senior academics. As well as healthcare providers (clinicians, nurses and allied health workers), and support staff who enable productive research, SVSHIP strategy and other leaders.

We are committed to hosting a more sustainable program, and have implemented several initiatives to reduce our environmental impact. We are providing programs, bios, and other materials online instead of printing. Another key initiative is providing vegetarian catering, as meat-based meals have, on average, 14 times higher environmental impact than vegan ones. We’re using local catering to minimize travel for delivery and service, and asking our suppliers to provide reusable or biodegradable cups and plates. By reducing meat consumption, we not only decrease our carbon footprint but also promote better health, as a great meat intake is linked to a 22% higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Even partially replacing meat with plant foods can increase lifespan and mitigate climate change.
